Every year, I enjoy giving a fresh twist to the timeless Gadsden "Don't Tread on Me" design. My fascination with it predates its adoption as a favorite among the Tea Party crowd. I still remember the very first one I wore—a hand-printed, all-over tee from my childhood days outside of Madison, Wisconsin in the 80s.
The Gadsden rattlesnake has always captivated me because it embodies what I'd call "non-aggressive strength." It signifies the ability to handle one's affairs if necessary without seeking conflict—a trait I believe reflects civilized conduct.
For those delving into the philosophical essence of libertarianism, this notion forms a significant part of it. It goes by various names, though some sound rather awkward, such as the "non-aggression principle" and "voluntaryism." Nonetheless, they convey the same message: "Respect my space, and everything will be harmonious," or simply put, "don't tread on me."
This year, I opted for a colonial-inspired version. I aimed to create an image reminiscent of something colonists might have encountered emerging from an old printing press. Drawing inspiration from my collection of era printmaking images, I fashioned something with a similar nostalgic appeal.
